Episode Description

The episode highlights a structural transition in managed cybersecurity—MSPs are increasingly relying on AI-enabled platforms like Cynomi to automate assessment, compliance, and remediation planning. This migration from manual, expertise-driven work toward processes mediated by software changes how capacity, oversight, and liability are distributed in managed service delivery.

Cynomi claims its integrated platform reduces assessment times from days to under an hour by combining data from tools like vulnerability scanners, EDR, and PSA, automating the creation of remediation plans and compliance reporting. The company asserts that a single vCISO operator can now serve up to 10-12 clients, a significant increase from prior human-based models, with potential future expansions to 50 clients. While AI undertakes technical labor, Cynomi maintains that human staff are still required for approving recommendations and client decision-making.

However, as automation advances, pricing anchored to CISO scarcity becomes less tenable. Dave Sobel questioned whether increased capacity will drive down prices, even as access to vCISO-like services expands for SMBs. Liability concerns are also growing: insurers are starting to exclude claims based on AI-generated security policies, making human oversight and documentation essential. The platform’s model does not transfer risk away from MSPs and still requires evidence and expert oversight to retain insurance or warranty coverage.

For MSPs, these developments mean increased reliance on vendors for critical processes, greater responsibility for verifying AI outputs, and pressure to clarify liability within client contracts. Firms must balance efficiency gains against new compliance risks, insurance exclusions, and warranted scrutiny over the quality and oversight of AI-assisted deliverables.
