Information for Communications Professionals

Thank you for your interest in the Business of Tech. This page is designed to help those who are looking to deliver a message via the show.

Want to brief us on what your company is doing?

Press Brief

The Business of Tech welcomes briefings from companies to give their unique perspective and to provide insights. As the show explores what those in the delivery of technology services need to know, the companies that work with those providers — or are those providers — have stories to tell.

Press briefings are available to anyone.
A press briefing is the opportunity for you to brief Dave Sobel on what you think he should know, and Dave will ask questions.

The use of a press briefing is not a guarantee of coverage on the show.
It is, however, welcome perspective to inform the stories and topics being covered.

The discussion will be in compliance with our Ethics information.

Share a Story that Matters

The Business of Tech is not your typical podcast. It’s short, focused, and story-driven — with an emphasis on news and commentary for professionals delivering technology services.

We aim to answer one core question: Why do we care?

What We’re Looking For

We rarely feature guests — and when we do, it’s because their story enhances the news or brings valuable, specific insight. We’re not a platform for general “thought leadership,” product pitches, or origin stories.

We feature guests in two primary formats:

First: Subject Matter Experts Who Add Context

These are guests who help unpack breaking news or trends by providing timely, non-promotional analysis.

Example:
When multiple security vulnerabilities emerged in MSP tooling, we brought on Huntress Labs’ Kyle Hanslovan to explain how vulnerabilities are reported, researcher expectations, and the legal landscape around disclosure.

For reference, listen to this example

Second: People Who Are Part of the Story

Sometimes, the story is the guest. If someone is directly influencing events or policy, that’s a story worth telling.

Example:
After several ransomware attacks in Louisiana — including one that led New Orleans to declare a state of emergency — the Secretary of State joined us to share his views on the role of MSPs and the legislation he was pursuing.

For reference, listen to this example

What Doesn’t Work for This Show

Please don’t pitch these — they’ll be rejected:
  • “This person is really smart.” We assume intelligence. That’s the baseline.
  • Generic topics, like:
  • “Trends and predictions”
  • “AI insights”
  • “Customer experience tips”
  • “Thought leadership strategies”
  • “Driving sales through technology”
  • The entrepreneurial journey — this isn’t a startup profile show.
  • Channel Chiefs pitching channel programs — that’s sales material. We’re not here to promote vendor GTM strategies or incentives.
  • Product demos or pitches — no one wants to hear your elevator pitch unless it’s attached to a real-world, newsworthy story.

Final Thoughts

We get a lot of pitches. Most aren’t a fit — and that’s okay. But we’re always looking for stories that bring clarity to the headlines, challenge assumptions, or expose a new angle. If you’ve got one of those, we want to hear it.

How We Operate

Ethics Statement

My goal is to provide information and value to the broader IT consulting channel, including vendors and partners of all sizes. If you deliver IT services, I believe I have a perspective to offer.

To that end, I have established a set of guiding principles:

If you find something that requires clarification, please ask.

I make every effort to follow the FTC guidelines in my business efforts.

I currently own stock in N-Able (NABL), which was part of my compensation from employment between 2013 and 2019.

Advertisements are clearly delineated within the content of my shows.

My paid consulting assignments are advisory in nature. I am hired to present my opinions in detail.

I honor embargoed statements from companies in the space.

I maintain the anonymity of my sources when asked to do so and when they are sharing information I believe to be in the public interest.

When I make a mistake, I strive to correct the error promptly and disclose the correction to listeners.

Business of Tech Content

Content posted on the Business of Tech has an additional set of guiding principles:

Advertising and sponsorship have no influence on our news reporting. Sponsors are disclosed on our website and ads are clearly distinguished from editorial content. For in-depth analysis documents (such as strategy briefs), if a vendor is a current sponsor, this is disclosed within the document for transparency.

If you find something that requires clarification, please ask.

AI is not used as a primary source of information.

AI is used in the creation of content for the purpose of summarization. All AI content is reviewed by a human.

Any potential stock conflict is made available via a disclosure.

Any interview subjects are not given the opportunity to preview or approve interview questions, nor are they allowed to review stories prior to publication.

I do not accept any preconditions for coverage of a story that requires me to say certain things.

There are no paid endorsements.

Any paid content is clearly positioned as such. An example is ads, which are clearly different in sound and presentation.

Communications Professionals

I recognize the following terminology for those who are communications professionals or authorized spokespeople for their organizations speaking on behalf of their organization in an official capacity:

“On background” is an agreement which both must agree to, which allows discussions that are not specifically attributed to you. There must be agreement for discussions to be on background.

“On the record” is the default position when speaking to MSP Radio. You say things, they are recorded and reported on.
