The arrival of AI-powered personal computers is reshaping the landscape for small and medium businesses, or SMBs, as they navigate a significant transition prompted by the end of support for Windows 10. A recent study by Techaisle reveals that the SMB market is not driven by a desire for AI features but is instead focused on upgrading for performance, reliability, and security, with over 60% prioritizing these factors in their purchasing decisions. As SMBs confront the logistical challenges of this transition, Managed Service Providers, or MSPs, emerge as crucial allies, guiding these businesses through a complex migration process. The study indicates that while SMBs trust their MSPs for recommendations, many report gaps in understanding AI capabilities and their implications for data security and control.

Small businesses are facing significant challenges in the current economy, with many owners hesitant to hire new employees. According to a recent article from The Washington Post, small businesses are integral to the U.S. economy yet are grappling with uncertainty that affects their hiring decisions. A survey conducted by the National Federation of Independent Business revealed that only 20% of small business owners plan to increase their workforce, down from 27% the previous year. This trend reflects broader economic concerns and a cautious outlook among entrepreneurs, who cite factors such as inflation and supply chain issues as major contributors to their reluctance to expand.

From SMB Nation, The 2026 forecast for Managed Service Providers (MSPs) indicates an optimistic outlook, with over 50% of surveyed MSPs anticipating growth despite economic uncertainties. According to survey data, growth categories exceeded 50%, signaling strong positivity within the MSP ecosystem. Notable trends include increased reliance on artificial intelligence for technical support and a focus on specialization as companies seek to differentiate themselves in a competitive market. Experts warn that the rise of AI may challenge traditional MSP roles, urging providers to adapt to evolving customer needs and technological advancements.

Why do we care?

So, we’re calling these “AI PCs,” but let’s be honest — SMBs aren’t buying for the AI. They’re upgrading because Windows 10 support is ending, and they need performance and security. Over 60% said that’s what actually matters.

The AI angle? It’s mostly marketing right now. Most small businesses don’t really understand what those AI features do — and frankly, a lot of MSPs are still figuring it out too. That’s where the real opportunity lies. SMBs trust their MSPs, but they need help making sense of what’s hype and what’s useful.

And with hiring slowing — only 20% of small business owners planning to add staff — they’re going to rely more on automation and managed services instead. That’s a silver lining for MSPs.

The data from SMB Nation backs that up: more than half of providers expect growth next year, especially those who specialize and use AI internally to boost support.

So here’s the takeaway — don’t sell AI PCs as magic. Sell reliability, security, and guidance. Let the vendors push the buzzwords. You bring the business value.
