Business of Tech | AI Takes the Spotlight: Trump’s Stargate

President Donald Trump revealed a four-year initiative called Stargate, aimed at enhancing the nation’s artificial intelligence infrastructure with a budget of five hundred billion dollars. The joint venture involves major tech companies like Oracle, OpenAI, and Microsoft, which will immediately invest one hundred billion dollars to expand computing capacity. Trump emphasized that this project will include the construction of large data centers to support advancements in AI technology. The initiative intends to address the shortage of high-capacity computing infrastructure.

Microsoft has adjusted its partnership with OpenAI, allowing the artificial intelligence company access to competitors’ computing resources. This new agreement modifies the exclusivity of new capacity, giving Microsoft a right of first refusal, while OpenAI is now permitted to build additional capacity for research and model training. Despite these changes, Microsoft retains exclusive rights to OpenAI’s technology for products like Copilot, with a revenue-sharing model in place. The partnership, extending through 2030, has faced scrutiny as some shareholders expressed concerns that Microsoft was not quickly providing enough computing power. OpenAI’s ambitious plans for development require substantial investment, with reports indicating they need billions of dollars in computing resources. Notably, if OpenAI achieves artificial general intelligence, it may restrict Microsoft’s access to some of its most advanced models.

LogicMonitor announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI to enhance data center operations through advanced artificial intelligence technologies. This collaboration aims to empower IT operations teams by integrating OpenAI’s reasoning models into LogicMonitor’s platform, specifically its AI agent, Edwin AI. The integration is set to streamline data management, enhance problem-solving capabilities, and improve operational resilience, ultimately transforming how organizations manage their IT environments. LogicMonitor’s CEO, Christina Kosmowski, emphasized the importance of this partnership in helping organizations prepare for the future of work by leveraging AI to drive innovation and efficiency.

Why do we care?

While the Stargate initiative gets headlines, I think Microsoft’s adjustment is more notable.   This is an acknowledgement that infrastructure demands are a limiting factor.    One could argue Stargate is part of the answer – let’s wait to see shovels in the ground.

LogicMonitor’s integration of OpenAI models underscores the trend of AI moving deeper into IT service management (ITSM). Automating and optimizing IT operations using reasoning models isn’t new, but LogicMonitor’s claim of “transforming” operations hints at a more aggressive adoption of advanced capabilities.

A trend to watch for – more partnerships with OpenAI, a company that is notably not an active participant in the IT channel.
