Business of Tech | Small Businesses Grapple with Inflation

A study by Xero reveals that 48% of US small business owners feel the impact of inflation on their cash reserves, with 44% expecting the trend to continue. The report highlights the challenges faced by small businesses, including limited cash flow and the inability to set aside funds for unforeseen challenges. Companies are responding by hiking prices and implementing cost-cutting measures. Digital tools are also emerging as a solution, with 70% of small business leaders using them for cash flow oversight.

Tech job ads offering remote and hybrid work options are declining, dropping from over 25% in August 2022 to below 20% in July and August. However, job ads mentioning remote and hybrid work are still higher than pre-COVID-19.   This is from a CompTIA analysis. 

According to research from a U.K.-based recruitment firm, the top reasons IT professionals are quitting their jobs include lack of salary increase, lack of career advancement, the need for new challenges, lack of leadership and vision, and working environment/company culture. Other factors include feeling underutilized, lack of exposure to the latest technologies, pursuing a better work/life balance, feeling underappreciated, and being over-stressed/overworked.

The other trend – burnout.   A recent survey by The Harris Poll reveals that 79% of employed Americans have experienced burnout in their careers, with 35% currently experiencing it. Job seekers also report high levels of burnout.   And a Gallup poll says it’s worse for managers, who are more likely to seek a job.  

Why do we care?

It’s a bit of a roundup of all the pressures on customers.    Cash flow will be a concern for smaller companies, and that opportunity to invest in tools to help with cost – or revenue – adjustments.    

Moreover, with the IT industry being the backbone of today’s digital-first world, addressing the concerns of IT professionals isn’t just necessary – it’s paramount. As the demand for IT skills soars, organizations need to create a conducive environment that promises growth, flexibility, and a healthy work-life balance.

Staffing will remain tight, and addressing those burnout and concerns from IT pros is critical for IT services organizations.
