According to a paper by Autonomy think tank, AI-driven productivity gains could lead to a four-day workweek for millions of workers without losing pay or productivity. The paper suggests that by 2033, 8.8 million UK workers could have a four-day workweek, while nearly 28 million could see their working hours reduced by 10% if large language models (LLMs) are deployed effectively. However, realizing these benefits will require political action and the establishment of automation hubs supported by trade unions and industry agreements. The paper also highlights the need for equitable distribution of AI benefits and the importance of worker voice in adopting AI technologies
A study by Celonis reveals that while 89% of businesses are adopting AI, 72% of IT managers have concerns about process deficiencies sabotaging AI implementation. Poor processes also impact employee morale, productivity, and innovation. Process optimization is seen as vital for achieving business objectives, with 99% of senior business leaders recognizing its importance. The study highlights barriers such as departmental languages, data silos, and uncooperative systems but emphasizes the potential of process intelligence platforms to overcome these challenges.
Why do we care?
The potential for AI-driven productivity to enable a four-day workweek by 2033 is a significant development. This projection not only indicates a substantial shift in work-life balance but also underscores the transformative power of AI in reshaping workforce dynamics. It’s crucial to note, however, that realizing these benefits hinges on strategic political actions and establishing collaborative frameworks involving automation hubs, trade unions, and industry agreements. Those frameworks are what I continue to be most interested in for service providers.
The Celonis study points to a gap between the potential of AI technologies and the current state of business processes. We like gaps – services can fill those in. The need for strategic, comprehensive planning that takes into account these multifaceted challenges is the opportunity.
